Repair or Replace Heating System? Five Factors to Consider

Kennesaw Heating Systems
Has your heating system met your expectations this winter? If you’ve found that your furnace has not been heating your home like it used to, it may need repairs. But when is it better to repair, and when should you replace it with a new heating unit instead?
At D. McKeon Heating & Air, we know each situation is different and one solution will never fit everyone. Here are some general guidelines that can help you begin to think about repairing versus replacing.
#1: Cost
Cost is a top consideration. You’ll need to look at what it will cost to repair your system and compare that amount to the cost of replacement. If the cost of repair is one-third to one-half the cost of replacement, you may be better off getting a new heating system.
#2: Age
Furnaces aren’t built to last forever, but you should still expect many years of service from your equipment. If the unit is less than 8 years old, it may have a few more years ahead of it. Even equipment that is 12 years old can provide great results with proper maintenance. However, older equipment is more likely to need future repairs, so consider this as well.
#3: Efficiency
In addition to needing more maintenance, older units are generally less efficient than new ones. Today’s models have outstanding energy efficiency ratings. In fact, many homeowners find that new units pay for themselves quickly through lower utility bills.
#4: Repairs
Is this the first time you’ve ever had to repair your system, or is it just another in a string of problems? If you’ve repaired your system only one or two times in the past 5 years, it’s probably worth sticking with your current furnace for a while longer. If you’ve had three or more major repairs on your unit, though, it’s time to think about replacement.
#5: Right Size
Is your current unit the right size for your home? If your furnace was professionally installed using the correct calculations, it will run efficiently and last longer. If your furnace is too large or too small, it’s more likely to fail, and it may be worth replacing.
